This is a poem that I wrote last week titled Rain, in honor of the rain falling in California for the last few weeks. I was born at the end of November and my mom always says that when she brought me home it rained for weeks. This poem touches on that nostalgia, but also reflects the very real need that we have for rain in California. I hope that you enjoy!
Rain
Comfort me
I am warm inside
and out you fall
steady rhythm
nurture
nature relishes
your drops
I am one
with nature
and I relish too
quenching the thirst
of the earth
quenches my thirst
my parched lips
turned up
towards the sky
the clouds
the rain falls.
I miss the rain
when it is gone
I enjoy the sun
photosynthesis
green leaves
grow strong
flowers emerge
on springs wings
but always my heart
lies in the rain
the sound on the roof
the feel of it
on my skin
the earth drinks
I drink
and know it all comes from the rain
tuck me in
beneath the eaves
under the blanket
the redwood tree
outside is wet
dripping
rain falls
spring waits
submerged
thirsting
drinking its full
so that later
it can rise
in sweet smelling blooms
in profusion of green
under blue skies, sunshine
but it begins here
on a rainy day
grey
wet
quenching the thirst
of the earth.
