Hello and welcome – this is my blog to share my poems. Each one is my own truth at the time that it is written and I share them with the hope that they might touch some truth in you. I am not tech savvy (my daughter set up this blog as a birthday present for me – yesterday was my 51st birthday). I am hoping to learn as I go. This poem, for example, is meant to be spaced with each line indented to a different spot. I write them that way in longhand in my notebooks, and feel that the spacing gives the poems a certain rhythm. However, while I typed in the spaces in the edit mode, when it is published then this is how it looks – each line starting at the beginning. There is a lesson in life here, accepting the lack of control, embracing the imperfections or beginning at the beginning when really you want to start further along, but for now, I am going to post this, my first blog. The first poem on it is about our Christmas tree. I hope that you enjoy.
The Tree
We choose it carefully
the perfect tree
each one so different
from the one before
pine cones
thick branches
wide spaces
and we cut
haul
tie and drive
setting up in our living room
the same spot
we place the tree inside
green, bristly needles
pine cones
and then the lights
white
shining, glimmering
against
the needles of green
the ornaments
in reds, golds, slivers
the delicate glass of
hummingbirds always hovering
buddhas fat
family trees of paper
hearts with glitter
my tree
is festooned
with memories
and how does it feel
this tree
with all its finery
does it embrace
the inside
the warm air
the adoring gaze
the oohs and aahhhs
or does it look
with longing
at the birds outside in the bush
see the wind
and miss its rustle
does its trunk
seeking water
feel the absence
of its roots
searching
for that connection
to the earth
the soil
dark, rocks
earthworms moving
and the roots
all alone
a stump
a few branches
rallying the nutrients
the water
and the sun
to grow again
another tree
to live on
in that place
on sloping hill
under wide open sky
and we
celebrate this cycle
this life
represented by the green tree
decked with lights, colors
celebrations of hope
light in the dark
our tree.
