Finding silence
not silent
weaving through the airwaves
the song
of the birds
in the backyard
the cars
move by
increasing speed
coming forward
decreasing sound
retreating
the house hums
electric wires
fueling
appliance
the turn of the page
the rustle
and the pen
it creaks
just a little
as I write
the soft whoosh
of my hand
moving across the paper
this silence
here alone
is not silent
but full
the molecules
of air
the crashing waves
of sound
they surround me
a comfort
a confine
we everyday
seek
something
a peace
an interlude
a moment of respite
silence
beckons
walking in on cat’s feet
rolling in with the fog
but when we sit
in silence
and realize
that it is not
our seeking
is transformed
we find
we have already found
the place
the space
we need
it is all around
at all times
the silence
is an idea
it’s listening
it’s the space
between the sounds
the pause
when we become
aware
and we really hear
so silence
is always there
and here
it’s in the dips
of the waves
reaching our ears
it’s in the space
in between
the molecules
colliding
we need
not seek
the absolute
the perfect
but find instead
the constant
the steady
the hum of life
lived
listen
to your silence
whatever it may be
and rejoice
in the sounds
of life
and living
and the space
in between
that brings
it all
so clearly
to our attention
the silence
we seek
is always here
silence.
